QlikView Client Access Licenses – CALs

All users need license from the QlikView Server to access or open a document/qvw. This license is referred as CALs i.e. Client Access License.

This license is required when user or developer access qvw in QlikView desktop or through Access point url.

CALs are acquired with the purchase of the QlikView Server and therefore are server based not client based.Since CALs come with the server, they are specific to the Server.

CALs types – Following types of CALs are available in QlikView

  1. Named User CAL
  2. Document CAL
  3. Session CAL
  4. Usage CAL

Named User CAL

Named user CAL is specific to the user or the machine. It cannot be shared, but user with this type of license can access any number of documents and for unlimited duration. This type of license is best suited for the developers and designers, creating the dashboard or dedicated users who need 24 * 7 access to the dashboarding application.

Document CAL

Document CAL associates user to the document instead of the QlikView Server. It allows user to access only one QlikView document. This type of license is good for the users who are interested in only one specific document.

Session CAL

Session CAL is not tied to a specific user or a machine. Session CALs allows a single user to access multiple document. Session CALs are used in a setup when there are large number of non-frequent users. Users can use the license as long as it is available. A Session CAL is locked for a minimum of 15 minutes, when used. If a specific user is not accessing a document for over 15 minutes then this CAL is available and can be used by other users.

Usage CAL

A Usage CAL gives a user the ability to initiate one session i.e. accessing one document per running 28-day period. This license is also not tied to a specific user. Usage CAL and Session CAL can be used in combination.

Leasing of QlikView License

QlikView developer/user can lease a license from the server so that the user can work offline for a period of 30 days. The QlikView client once connected to the server will obtain a Named User CAL. A user can lease a license from the Server by opening a qvw on the server from QlikView desktop.

  1. Thanks! This is very helpful and informative especially to those newbeis in QV.

  2. I am interested in Qlikview tool for my personal learning and further development. I do not want to commit a lot of money in the beginning so i wan tto understand what could be the best license for me. I do not want to make commercial production level dashboards at this time, but the idea is to get to a level where i can show it and influence my company to scrap some currently used tools for BI and use this instead. I already have the personal Edition, but i have a lot of major issues and problems when i create and reopen the dashboard/documents. They crash and i can never open them after that, I have checked many web blogs and community responses on this topic and everyone seems to have the same problem. The documents just crash and this completely ruins the whole work we put in creating the dashboard. Some suggested that the only solution to this problem is to buy a licensed version, but i am confused by the license terms and types. What is the difference between Named User vs Document CAL, its not completely clear. Can i just have a document CAL and create small/simple dashborads for showing in to the management teams in the company from my own computer?

    Thanks

For your requirement all you need is personal edition of QlikView.QlikView licensing works with QlikView server and if you don’t want to invest in QlikViiew at present then you don’t need server and licenses.
Personal edition of QlikView works perfectly fine. The whole purpose of personal edition is to use the way you intend to use.
Personal edition of QlikView has all the features of licensed version only difference is application developed on Personal edition cannot be shared but you can use your laptop to show your management.
It may be crashing due to many other reasons.
One of the reasons for your QlikView application crashing may be the data you are loading in your dashboard.
If you are using your laptop and the size of your data/data model is more than 2gb then your application may crash.
As QlikView is an in-memory tool, it will load all the data in your RAM. Please check how much RAM you have on your laptop.
Try creating smaller application first. Load just one or 2 table with limited data and then proceed.
Also check for Synthetic keys in your data model. Synthetic keys are memory-intensive. Check my blog on how to resolve synthetic keys.
If data is big then you can always use QVDs to compress data.

Let me know if i can help you in any way or if you want me to review your data model.
I will be glad to help.
